What's in a name? ON SEO AND BRANDING

So, I’ve been revamping the SEO on my website; one way being putting a big long blurb in the footer my site where I crammed in as many keywords as possible while still trying to make it make some semblance of sense and also useful for someone who isn’t a search-engine bot to read. So obviously, you want to cast a wide net with SEO so the right people will find you, and that sometimes looks like using words that other people would use for you that you wouldn’t use for yourself. I had to use a lot of words I wouldn’t normally use myself - I’m going to quote the blurb below in italics so you can see!

I’m attempting to make my site easier to find on Google through exceedingly awkward overuse of keywords. The following is more for bots to read than for actual people to read, but you’re welcome to take a look if you want to. Having to think up a bunch of keywords was harder than I expected! I had to think from the perspective of prospective clients looking for someone like me through Google searches to find the right words to use to make it easy to find me, rather than just using the kinds of words I’d use to describe myself. There’s actually a pretty big incongruity there, having done some research on the subject of keywords used in this industry before delving in.“Kinky Companion” just sums things up for me so well already, and the other words just don’t feel quite as spot on for me as that term does, even though they still pretty accurately depict the kind of experience I offer - well enough for me to use them in my SEO.

So despite never referring to myself in these ways myself, in my SEO I use terms like ‘escort’, ‘luxury’, ‘GFE”, dominatrix, and even shudder - Mistress. (If you’ve read my entire site, you know I have a viscerally unpleasant reaction to being referred to as ‘Mistress’. There’s even a footnote at the end of the blurb instructing people never to actually call me that.) The thing is, though - people search for what they search for, and they search for what they’re familiar with. If someone searches for a “GFE pro-domme” or an “Escort Mistress”, or “Elite Tattooed Companion”, because that’s the kind of language they’re familiar with, I want them to find me because it’s likely that if they’re using those search terms they’re looking for someone like me, and just wouldn’t think to search for “Kinky Companion”. I want to make sure I catch the eye of people looking for the kind of experience I offer, not just the ones who are already familiar with my name and tagline.

So SEO aside, why do I use ‘Kinky Companion’ as my self-descriptor? Why not “GFE Dominatrix” or “BDSM Escort”? “Sex Domme”? Or even ‘Kinky Courtesan”? The kinky bit is self evident, I think, but I like the term Companion because it suggests the kind of ongoing friendly relationships I share with my clients. Our meetings aren’t just sexual; there’s an element of companionship there that transcends the bedroom. As a social companion I frequently spend time with my clients out at dinner, or shows, or other activities in public, before we retire to the boudoir - or dungeon.
